Why does everything turn out crappy?
What do you mean?
I don't know, everything you want to do, everything you think is going to make you happy just turns into crap.
You're too young to talk that way.
But it's true.
Have you seen those pictures of Earth from space?...Do they make you feel small and insignificant?...Why do they give you a glimmer of hope in the midst of rejection? A little thread to hang on to. Misplaced word, suggestion of the future, under a court of law it would look like an accident, but it's not...Why do they get to decide what's going to happen?
They just do.

There were phrases of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony that still made Coe cry. He always thought it had to do with the circumstances of the composition itself. He imagined Beethoven deaf and soul-sick, his heart broken, scribbling furiously while Death stood in the doorway, clipping his nails.
Still, Coe thought, it might have been living in the country that was making him cry. It was killing him with its silence and loneliness - making everything ordinary, too beautiful to bear.
